Beckett & Raeder, Inc. (BRI) was recommended by Michigan State University to join the architectural team as the civil engineer and landscape architectural consultant for a building addition for the Wharton Center for the Performing Arts. Working in tandem with a steering committee comprised of the user, University staff, and the architect, BRI developed a schematic plan for the front plaza area affected by the addition. The original plaza was an award-winning design containing sculpture, memorial gardens, special paving, retaining walls, lighting, and site furnishings.
Paramount to the execution of a successful renovation, the project required relocation of sculpture and sensitive design respectful of the memorial gardens, pedestrian circulation, and the mature oak trees on site. Beckett & Raeder, Inc. worked with University staff to create a design that enhanced these elements and sensitively integrated the new layout into the existing conditions to preserve the mature oaks. The schematic design was used to enhance the fundraising program and approvals of campus administration.
BRI's responsibilities included schematic design, design development, civil engineering (with service and storm alteration as required), construction documents, bidding and award, and construction administration.
